Forms and email delivery after moving an AI site to WordPress
Contact forms are the first thing that quietly breaks after a migration. An IT expert explains SMTP, deliverability, spam protection and testing.

Why forms break more often than you think
In almost every AI-to-WordPress migration I supervise, the design survives and the texts survive, but the contact form quietly stops delivering mail. Nobody notices for weeks, because the form still shows a friendly 'thank you' message. Then someone calls and asks why their three quote requests never arrived.
The root cause is usually not the form plugin. It is the mail path. An AI builder sends form mail through its own polished infrastructure with proper sender reputation. A fresh WordPress install on budget hosting sends mail with the built-in PHP mail function from a server that shares an IP address with hundreds of other sites. Many of those sites send spam, so your messages inherit a bad reputation and land in junk folders or are dropped silently.
Set up SMTP properly on day one
The single most important step after migration is installing an SMTP plugin and connecting it to a real sending service. Options I regularly deploy are transactional mail providers with an API connection, or the SMTP account of the business mailbox the client already pays for. API-based connections are more reliable than password-based SMTP because they survive password changes and two-factor rules.
While you are in the DNS zone anyway, check the three authentication records: SPF, DKIM and DMARC. SPF says which servers may send mail for your domain. DKIM signs each message so receivers can verify it was not altered. DMARC tells receivers what to do with messages that fail the checks. Without these three records, even a perfect SMTP setup will underperform. Most providers give you the exact records to copy; it takes ten minutes and prevents months of silent mail loss.
Recreate each form field by field
Resist the temptation to rebuild the form from memory. Open the old AI site, fill in every form once, and screenshot the confirmation and the email you receive. That gives you the complete specification: field names, required fields, dropdown options, the autoresponder text and who receives the notification.
In WordPress, a mainstream form plugin covers nearly every case I see in practice: contact forms, quote requests, file uploads, multi-step wizards and simple payment forms. Recreate the fields exactly, then check the notification settings twice. The most common mistake is that the notification goes to the site admin email, which is often the developer's address, instead of the client's inbox.
Spam protection without annoying visitors
A form without spam protection on WordPress will attract bots within days. The old-fashioned image captcha works but costs you real submissions; people abandon forms they cannot read. Modern alternatives are invisible checks: honeypot fields that only bots fill in, time-trap checks that reject submissions that arrive suspiciously fast, and reputation-based services that score each submission silently.
My default setup is a honeypot plus a reputation service in 'silent' mode. Only if spam still leaks through do I escalate to a visible challenge. Review the blocked submissions log once a month: a spam filter that is too aggressive is just as damaging as no filter, because real customers vanish without a trace.
Test like a paranoid engineer
After rebuilding, test every form end to end: submit it, confirm the success message appears, confirm the notification email arrives in the real inbox (not spam), confirm the autoresponder arrives at the submitter's address, and confirm the entry is stored in WordPress as a backup. Repeat from a phone. Repeat with an ad blocker enabled, because aggressive blockers sometimes break form scripts.
Then put a reminder in your calendar to submit a test entry every month. Mail delivery decays over time: IP reputations change, DNS records get edited during other work, plugins update. A monthly thirty-second test is the cheapest insurance you will ever buy. If you want a partner that handles the technical side of the whole move, including forms, that is exactly what Convert2WP does for AI-built websites.
